We are delighted to announce the world premiere of Sebastian Meise’s GREAT FREEDOM in the official selection of the 74th edition of the Festival de Cannes.

Synopsis:
In postwar Germany, Hans is imprisoned again and again for being homosexual.
Due to the paragraph 175, his desire for freedom is systematically destroyed.
The one steady relationship in his life becomes his long time cell mate, Viktor, a convicted murderer. What starts in revulsion grows to something called love.

Production note:
The joint German-Austrian production by Germany’s Rohfilm Productions (Benny Drechsel) and Austria’s FreibeuterFilm (Sabine Moser, Oliver Neumann) was backed by the Austrian Film Institute (ÖFI), the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM), the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), ORF Film/Fernseh-Abkommen, Filmstandort Austria (FISA), Vienna Film Fund (FFW), Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB) and ZDF. It was mainly shot in a disused prison in Magdeburg, Germany. Further filming took place in Vienna, Lower Austria and Berlin. The shooting was interrupted by the first lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic and resumed in summer 2020.

Statement from the producers:
“We are deeply honoured to have the fantastic opportunity to present Great Freedom in the Official Selection Un Certain Regard of the 74th edition of the Film Festival de Cannes. After a long journey from the first idea through the challenges of the Covid19 pandemic, this is the most wonderful place to premiere Sebastian Meise’s powerful sophomore feature of love and longing for freedom. We congratulate the director and his creative team, the outstanding cast, the entire film crew and all our partners to this extraordinary success!”

TOUCH ME NOT by Adina Pintilie wins Golden Bear for best feature film and Best First Feature Film Award at 68. Berlinale 2018

TOUCH ME NOT by Adina Pintilie wins Golden Bear for best feature film and Best First Feature Film Award at 68. Berlinale 2018

Feb. 26, 2018

We congratulate Adina Pintilie, our entire team, and all supporters for winning the Golden Bear and the Best First Feature Film Award with TOUCH ME NOT at the 68. Internationalen Filmfestpiele Berlin 2018!

The Golden Bear came as a great surprise to everyone, but being honored with awards by two independent international juries validates the strength of a film that not only in its narration and form, but also in the way it was made embodies the most important values of our European society: equality and freedom.

As a five party co-production by Romania, Germany, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and France TOUCH ME NOT is a passionate statement for independent film making and its success should inspire independent filmmakers worldwide with confidence in this important part of the cinema universe.

The project first received development and later production funding from MITTELDEUTSCHE MEDIENFÖRDERUNG (MDM). MDM represents the federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, where a large part of the scenes shown in the film were shot and many of the actors and non-actors live and work. We want to thank MDM’s CEO Claas Danielsen and his predecessor Manfred Schmidt as well as the entire MDM team for their courage and faith in the project which became the first feature film by a female Romanian director to enter the competition program of a category A film festival.
We are very proud that a project which Rohfilm Productions co-developed from the very
beginning became this wonderful film TOUCH ME NOT. We would like to thank Adina and everyone involved in its production. TOUCH ME NOT has become nothing less than one of the world’s most discussed films, a deeply human piece of art, relevant and important due to not only its content but also the politics of its making.

Rohfilm presents TOUCH ME NOT by Adina Pintilie @ 68th Berlinale Competition

Rohfilm presents TOUCH ME NOT by Adina Pintilie @ 68th Berlinale Competition

Jan. 17, 2018

“Tell me how you were loved, to tell you how you love”

Touch Me Not, Adina Pintilie’s debut film, was selected for the 68th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, marking a premiere: she is the first female film director from Romania to participate in the official competition of the festival.
The film is a personal exploration that questions the preconceived ideas we have about intimacy as a fundamental aspect of human existence. Exploring, beyond the taboos, the essential role that intimacy plays in human development, TOUCH ME NOT aims to open new perspectives, educate, promote tolerance and freedom of expression, create a space of self-reflection, provoking the viewer to reevaluate their own ideas about intimacy.
Filmed over a 10-week period between 2015 and 2017, with a mixed cast of professional actors and real people, Touch Me Not brings together people across Europe: Laura Benson (England / France), Tomas Lemarquis (Iceland / France) Christian Bayerlein (Germany), Grit Uhlemann (Germany), Hanna Hofmann (Germany), Seani Love (England / Australia), Irmena Chichikova (Bulgaria) and Dirk Lange (Germany).

Director’s bio-filmography
Graduated in 2008 from the National University of Drama and Film Bucharest, Adina Pintilie is a young Romanian visual artist and filmmaker, often awarded in prestigious international film festivals. At the border between fiction, documentary and visual art, her work is very particular in the new Romanian cinema landscape, standing out through a highly personal visual style, the courage to experiment in cinematic language and an uncompromising exploration of human psyche.
Since 2010 until present, Adina Pintilie is also the curator of the Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival BIEFF (www.bieff.ro).

Synopsis Mali and her family live in Jaffa, where they own a garage. Taufik and his father Hasan work for them. Mali and Taufik have been having a stormy affair for several months now that seems to have come naturally. They keep the forbidden affair a secret and very much fear the reaction of their families. When Mali accidentally gets pregnant, they must act.

Director Keren Yedaya, whose debut OR (MON TRESOR) won the Camera D’Or and Grand Prix Semaine de la Critique in 2004, is returning to Cannes with an unusual melodrama. Led by the hypnotic performances of Dana Ivgy, Ronit Elkabetz, Mahmud Shalaby and Moni Moshonov and the mesmerizing cinematography of Pierre Aim (BIENVENUE CHEZ LES CH’TIS, LA HAINE) JAFFA is a heart-rending love story, a barometer of the mental state of a country and homage to the heyday of Egyptian cinema.
